Experimenting Face Blur

Here i was working with blur and long shutter speed. I really like the look of blur so i played with reflection and long shutter speed for my self portrait work. Im looking at my self identity as a Plastic Samoan.

I really liked the use of lighting and reflection. I just picked up the mirror and began to play with shutter speed for this experimentation.
I like the way the blur works but will need to give it another go. I like the colour and purpose of blurring out my face is my identity as myself is so unknown to me. I still need to work on this and play with double exposure in my next experimentation.

Research

Self Portrait Research

This is a brain storm about myself. I talked to my parents about where they came from in Samoa. Where my grandparents came from and why they had moved to New Zealand. This is helping me understand myself abit better and my background and culture as a samoan. I didn't know what village i came from but sitting down with my parents and discussing a little about my background helped.

Self Portrait Research

http://samoanweavinghq.com/plastic-samoans/ written by Maureen Unasa

This is a article that i have been reading. Similar people who feel the same way as myself either they are Afakasi and feel "plastic. This article is helping me think about my ideas for my project, I like to gain other information from other people who has had similar experiences as myself.

Paper plane Excercise

Today in class we looked at Experimentation making sure that as a class or when we begin our project we look at trying multiple things or trying new ideas to help us perfect our idea. We learnt that we sometimes may fail and that it's all apart of experimenting.

Paper Plane:
What was working? What's not working?
Our paper plane didn't work out as good as we thought it would. We thought that the weight would have been the cause of why our paper plane wouldn't fly far. Then again in our paper plane we had a gap in the middle where the wind would get through. So me and my panther decided to glue the wings together to avoid the wind from getting through the middle of our paper plane. Again that didn't work out also. This just tells us that for you in order to gain better ideas you need to start somewhere and that it's alright to fail that's what experimenting is all about.

Self Portrait Research:

I am thinking about looking at my culture and identity and my placement as full Samoan New Zealand born female. How i fit into my culture? Where? When? My key word for this project will be Plastic. Growing up i've always felt left out not knowing my language nor my culture. I wasn't brought up in the Fa'a Samoa way in my house hold. So it has been different for me growing up as a child. Most of my cousins have gained the opportunity to learn the language and the culture in their household. I want to use photography to look at me, myself and what i identify myself as in todays society. I've used the word Plastic in high school that's what the girls would refer me to because I only knew little knowledge about where i come from and my homeland. It sometimes makes me question who i really am in this society today. So i want to look at what i would identify myself as today.

Evaluating

When evaluating need to remind myself to be open minded about my class mates around me. Also be careful about how i discuss my feedback and be mindful of how i say it.

Surface Research & In Depth Research

Surface Research: The boat to me represents me having such little knowledge about a topic. Whilst i throw the net out towards the ocean to gather information from different sources like internet, videos, books etc. The fishing net allows me to collect all the information for my research.

In depth image: the divers are represent looking for more. Diving into the sea to find more information and divers scatter in the ocean to look for more. This represents in depth research.

TIME MANAGEMENT

What my weeks will be looking like from now on.

TOI

Etelagi (Mother) Me (Kendra) Sului (Father) - 2013, Rotorua Blue Lake

This is a image of me and my parents at the National Outrigging Secondary Competition. We just won our first gold and made school history by winning a National title for Auckland Girls after 7 years. This picture helps me to remember the time where i first started as a paddler. It reminds me of how far I have come. It reminds me of all the obstacles I have faced alongside with my parents. As a kid I've always been different to everyone else in my family even being left handed, i was the odd one out but as i grew older I started to find my interest. Which was in art and underground hip hop.

                            VOICE

Art to me is about sharing my experiences and obstacles with everyone around me. It's about finally having a voice of my own to share with the world and show them how i see things. I enjoy art because there is no limit to what we can create and mould my craft in my own individual way.
