This is my final project I have created with a mix of crossfades, overlapping and various shots. Everything that I had experimented with I use some bits to try and create my moving image. Mainly mid and close ups of paddling. I use a few low angles to get a close up of the paddle. I thought that my project worked well together with the music and the shots. One thing I would of probably changed was gather more footage for this advertisement to give the audience a more in depth insight of the sport of out-rigging. I used the theme song rebel sport uses just to give the audience a sense of what my ads for. Hopefully that gives them a hint about what it is. I really just wanted to create a sports promotional advertisement that my footage would suit. The hardest part for this would probably be trying to gather the information and artist to help develop my idea further. I did turn to look at directors of commercials to help me seek inspiration and ideas.

Zed- Renegade Fighter
This is the theme song used in a rebel sports ad. Though of using this in my work just to hint to the audience that it's a rebel sports promotion ad.

Albiston has done various projects and documented a couple of series.
This was an ad created/directed by Mark Albiston. Looking at the power of team work/team mates and courage. Uses a cutting transitions of the different team events that take place. The dull lighting works well with the story that the director is trying to show.

Experimentation
This is an experimentation with overlapping and also an exercise to help me put a logo at the end for my advertisement. I used panning in one of the layers where I showed the scenery of where I paddled with my team and another layer of where we ended up paddling to. I really like the different layers put together.
Rebel Sports
I officially came to a decision to create an sports ad to promote Rebel Sports clothing. Rebel Sport is a large sport equipment based in New Zealand. The store was born out of a franchise agreement between Briscoe Group Rebel Sport Australia in 1995. There are a chain of stores in New Zealand.
The store is known nationwide and are successfully known for promoting young new Zealand athletes. I thought that because out-rigging isn't promoted as much why not make an Ad based on promoting rebel sport clothing. This idea came to mind because I like to shop for sport clothing. Especially shop for clothing or equipment that would be able to increase my performance in canoeing.
I officially don't own this company obviously, but just using this to finish my ad. I won't upload any of this online. I just used the rebel logo for my moving image purposes.

This was an advertisement directed by Dennis Hitchcock which was produced by Scott Donaldson. What i like about this is that the Powerade drink is always referred back to the ad. We see in some product ads sometimes don't make sense. Powerade drink is made for sport and supports sport. So Hitchcock has used rugby as one of the sports. We also see a fast quick pace ad also we see a lot of action in this moving image. I really like the use of extreme close-ups in this ad. The first part we see an extreme close-up of the players face which gives the audience a sense of Determination the player has in his eyes. This seeks the attention of the audience and athletes to believe that this product will really help them with their sport performance.
Another commercial made by Dennis Hitchcock
Experimentation with music and transitions.
This was an experimentation that i was working with. I used a variety of angles with this experimentation.
I like the use of
- close up angles
- low angles
- underwater angles
- panning shots
I think what needs to be worked on is the music. Maybe choose different type of music for my
advertisement to grab the audiences attention. I like the sense of journey that this footage gives on how canoeing begins. I need to cut this maybe a bit shorter. Usually ads are less than a minute and just give a quick glimpse of what the sport is. I think that is what needs to be worked on. So i'll have to cut to the point in this advertisement and give a quick glimpse of what I want the audience to see in my final.
Commercial Research
Just looking at typical New Zealander commercials . This is one of my favourite ads that has been created especially the Kiwi humour that is been added to it. The use of two shot mid shot works really well in this commercial.
I think New Zealanders are really creative with the script in the Commercials they make. This is another one of my favourite ads that have been created. What i also like about New Zealand commercials. I really think it grabs the attention of the young youth especially with the drinking and driving. The directors have carefully thought about there targeted audience.
I really liked the use of music/sound in this rowing commercial. I like the wide range of shots and the close ups work really well in this media showing the technique and motion the rowers have.
Techniques used: High shot, close ups, mid-shots and extreme long shots.
The different shots work well with the music as well. The music is a fast paced beat which suits sport mainly. I like the reverse scene used in this clip as well. I might work on using a reverse part in my ad.
Content - Change of Idea Sports Advertisment
I decided to change my overall idea of my moving image. I have changed and decided to combine my sports footage to create a sports advertisement for maybe a sports shop/clothing. I thought that the footage and angles I had used best suited a sports ad or in someway a sports promotion video you would usually see on TV. So I have collected some of my footage to make a montage of the different angles/shots I have to work with and played with the different transitions of crossfading. In this advertisement I really just want to give the audience a hint of what out-rigging is. Alot of people don't know what it really is and just refer out-rigging to rowing or kayaking. My aim is to give a sense of what this sport is to people who don't know what it is.

playing with music cutting and cross disolve.
Editing my experimentation/final. Playing with over lap and crossfade.
I chose to use this music to experiment. I like the beat and I think it works well with paddling and the scenery.
The footage I collected from training. I was just playing with this and experimenting with the footage.
I feel like my idea isn't really portraying through my moving image. I thought that the different angles were working well together but for me. This isn't really showing my idea really well. It's hard to find artist that suit to my sort of idea. I like the use of the natural lighting and showing the journey of paddling. I use the technique of time lapsing certain parts of my video just to speed the scene of me paddling.

Experimentation with Reverse
Here I used Premier to overlap two different videos. I was looking at movement and also playing with music and beat. I like the overlap technique of paddling and how the boat moves as one. I used the transition of crossfade to create a smooth transition in to reverse speed.

Image Research - Researching The Sport
Various images that i have taken and also images people have taken of out-rigging. I was looking at various angles of the camera work. I also like the use of various sceneries. How the photographer captures the action. Maybe want to look at developing some ideas to do with scenery. Paddling in different sceneries I might try that for my next experimentation.
Self Directed - Research
Sports action cameras. Looking at the different use with variety of water action.
Looking at outrigger canoes surfing in Hawaii. This is the sport I identify with but looking at various youtube videos with the use of a go pro experience.
TASK 10 - HOLLYWOOD MONTAGE

My focus in the montage was a bit off. This is also another thing i need to watch out for myself.

Darcell Apelu
The link above is a video of the Artist Darcell Apelu who combines her culture. The parallel worlds one of her non-existent Polynesian culture and her involvement in the sport of woodchopping. She has been competing in woodchopping since she was 14. Apelu was going through a phase in her life where she couldn't ignore the separate worlds. Apelu's aim was to open up others to embrace and accept difference.
I really like the use of sound. The sound works well with her idea that she is portraying about woodchopping and her culture. I felt as if the piece was very intimate and personal and her actions as she moves in a woodchopping motion portrayed the frustration of living in between these two parallel worlds. I really enjoyed this work i thought that it came well together.
For me personally i feel the same. Not being able to experience my culture but being able to compete in sports as like out rigging since I was the age of 11. I felt in a way connected me and made me closer to my culture. Va'a (Paddling/boat) was probably the closest thing I thought I had and knew really well to do with my Samoan culture.

Experimentation
Here I was experimenting with Time lapse on my Ipod. I like the use of speed in video but not too sure If i want to use in my final piece. In my time lapse video, I would film my drive home especially with Auckland traffic. I thought that it would be a cool idea looking at the traffic and at the time the weather was a good part as well.
I haven't come to a solid idea yet. Which i need to figure out.

Shigeyuki Kihara - The Last Taualuga
Shigeyuki Kihara is of Samoan/ Japanese decent and is a contemporary artist and the first New Zealander to hold a solo exhibition at the metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Kihara was born in Samoa and immigrated to New Zealand at the age of 16.
Kihara's self-portrait images in her exhibitions include nudity in provocative poses that portrayed colonial appearance of Polynesian women as sexual objects. Kihara is known as a fa'afafine which is known as the 3rd gender of Samoa. Fa'afafine is a samoan who is physically male gifted but has the spirit of a woman.
The performance piece by Shigeyuki Kihara "The Last Taualuga" draws on the classical samoan siva (dance) of colonialism in Samoa we see from an indigenous perspective.
I really like the use of lighting in this piece of performance art and also the way Shigeyuki has portrayed her concept of the old taualunga. Also the look of using a victorian mourning outfit gives me goosebumps.

Plastic Samoan Final Image
"Plastic Samoan"
After playing around with splitting images. I have chosen my final image I have split my images in half. One half of me as myself and the other dressed up in a puletasi to emphasise the idea of "Plastic Samoan" i have blurred out the side where i am wearing my samoan outfit. This is to reinforce the idea of me not knowing who I am nor what i identify myself with culturally. Am I kiwi? Am i Samoan? A New Zealand born samoan caught between to worlds. I have purposely blurred one side to show that my Samoan knowledge is very little to myself.
Experimentation
I was looking at the artist Tomoko Sawada she uses a series of images. I liked the way she used various images to create one. So bottom line of images I had usual self along with the top line I was dressed in a samoan cultural out fit. I like the series of images. So this was an experiment I made on photoshop.
Artist Research David Hillard
David Hillard is an artist I discovered in High School. Hillard is an american fine arts photographer that mainly worked with panoramic photographs. He documents from his own experiences and from the people around him. I really liked the way he has split various images to create one panoramic image. I really want to use that in my final image by splitting images to create one.
Experimentation with Photoshop and Blur.
Here i wanted to bring the idea of blur into my image. I didn't like the idea of pixelating my face. So I wanted to use blur. On my left side you see the usual me along with the image on the right I have blurred my face on the right. I have dressed in a puletasi which is a samoan outfit that females usually wear to special events or church. Out of my whole life i have only one puletasi remaining in my closet so I wanted to represent myself as a true samoan. Wearing the Samoan outfit and a lei. I have blurred my face purposely to show that my knowledge of my samoan side is very little. Reasons why I have blurred this out with the use of motion blur.

Francesca Woodman Research
Francesca Woodman was an American photographer she was best known for her black and white images she created featuring herself and models. Woodman was born April 3, 1958, Denver, Colorado, United States. Died in January 19, 1981. Many of Francesca's images show young women nude, blurred she used long exposure times to merge with their surroundings. Most of her work gained a lot of critical attention. Years after she had killed herself at the age of 22. Woodman's brother Charles later became an associate professor of electronic art.
her mother was Jewish and her fathr is from a Protestant background. Both her parents were artist. Woodman attended public school in Boulder, Colarada from 1963 to 1971. Except for second grade where she attended school in Italy. She began high school in 1972 at a private Massachusetts boarding school where she began to develop her interest and her photographic skills. Woodman studied in Rome between 1977 and 1978.
This is a youtube video on Francesca Woodman. Look at her art work and looks at her background as an artist and her family. I really like the way she has used blur in her art work and hope to try and bring it into my work.

Playing with double exposure and Pixelating Image.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4c0Wh0j_gVg - Photoshop Tutorial on how to Pixelate an Image this is another tool I may want to work with.
The blur tool i used this in my Image. I really like the look of the blur effect on my face. I think i will keep playing with this effect. I will most definitely playing with photoshop for my final image.
This image I was playing with double exposure. I really like the effect that it creates in the image. I want to try again using my Samoan outfit and proper lighting.
I was playing with Pixelating Image tool which is something I may want to work with in my final work. I halved my face to show the difference. I like the look but definitely want to keep playing with this.

Experimentation Lighting
Here I began to experiment with the use of lighting and shadow. I placed the light in different areas and used my door to block out some light. I want to experiment in other areas as well. So i will continue to experiment with this.
Research Artist - Shigeyuki Kihara
Shigeyuki Kihara is a contemporary artist and the first ever New Zealand to hold and exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Kiharas self-portrait photographs in the exhibitions included nudes in provocative poses that portrayed colonial images of polynesian women as sexual objects. Kihara is known as a fa'afafine. Kihara was born in Samoa her mother is Samoan and her father Japanese.
Kihara immigrated to New Zealand at the age of sixteen to further her studies. She trained in Fashion Design at Wellington Polytech which is now known as Massey University.
I like the use of lighting Kihara has used in her work. So for my experiment I will play with lighting and shadow with my self portrait image. I also like the use of colour in this image.
Research Artist
Tomoko Sawada
Sawada graduated in 1998 with a degree in Media design later in 2000 with a degree in Photography from the Seian University of Art & Design in Otsu, Shgia, Japan.
Theme of her work is to show case human identity, and womens roles through the japanese culture. I find similar ideas through Tomoko Sawada work. As we both look at identity and for me I am looking at the placing of being a New Zealand born Samoan. I like the series of images she has uses throughout this piece of work. Tomoko Sawada uses various types of looks and captures herself in them.
Sawada uses photography and techniques of performance art to explore ideas of identity.

Experimenting Face Blur
Here i was working with blur and long shutter speed. I really like the look of blur so i played with reflection and long shutter speed for my self portrait work. Im looking at my self identity as a Plastic Samoan.
I really liked the use of lighting and reflection. I just picked up the mirror and began to play with shutter speed for this experimentation.
I like the way the blur works but will need to give it another go. I like the colour and purpose of blurring out my face is my identity as myself is so unknown to me. I still need to work on this and play with double exposure in my next experimentation.
