Darcell Apelu
The link above is a video of the Artist Darcell Apelu who combines her culture. The parallel worlds one of her non-existent Polynesian culture and her involvement in the sport of woodchopping. She has been competing in woodchopping since she was 14. Apelu was going through a phase in her life where she couldn't ignore the separate worlds. Apelu's aim was to open up others to embrace and accept difference.
I really like the use of sound. The sound works well with her idea that she is portraying about woodchopping and her culture. I felt as if the piece was very intimate and personal and her actions as she moves in a woodchopping motion portrayed the frustration of living in between these two parallel worlds. I really enjoyed this work i thought that it came well together.
For me personally i feel the same. Not being able to experience my culture but being able to compete in sports as like out rigging since I was the age of 11. I felt in a way connected me and made me closer to my culture. Va'a (Paddling/boat) was probably the closest thing I thought I had and knew really well to do with my Samoan culture.
